If your organization works with 1099 physicians -- whether you're an MSO, a locum tenens company, or a physician staffing firm -- you've probably been asked some version of this question: what benefits can we offer our doctors?
The short answer for most standard benefits is: not much. 1099 independent contractors aren't employees, so traditional group benefit plans don't apply. And that gap -- particularly around disability insurance -- creates a real problem for physician satisfaction and retention.
The Cooperative Coverage Arrangement, or CCA, is the solution.
A CCA is a legal structure that allows independent contractors to access group insurance rates without becoming employees. Through Hollowtree's CCA, 1099 physicians can enroll in group disability insurance -- the same product that W-2 physicians get through hospital employment, at comparable group pricing -- without any change to their contractor classification.
From an HR perspective, the lift is minimal. CCA enrollment happens at onboarding, alongside the standard W-9 and contractor agreement process. Physicians receive enrollment materials, review their options, and elect coverage or decline. Hollowtree handles all ongoing administration.
Your team's obligation is communicating the benefit exists and including Hollowtree's enrollment packet in your onboarding kit. That's it.
The CCA does not create an employer-employee relationship. It does not affect how physicians are classified, taxed, or managed. It is a voluntary benefit physicians can access through your organization because of the Hollowtree relationship.
